Oropos Lagoon

Home Destinations Athens Oropos Lagoon

Oropos Lagoon (420 hectares) is a wetland lying at the northern part of Attiki and it is characterized by the presence of Asopos
River at its western part and of a coplex system of sand flat, mud flats and lagoons at its eastern parts. The site is an important
wetland serving as an intermediate resting station for migratory birds. Its most characteristic habitat type, the seasonally inundated
sand and mud flats, is unique for eastern Central Greece.

This small area full of marshes, combines a river delta, with long seashore and provides an excellent environment for both marine
and fresh water loving birds. The area is easy to walk, while most birds are gathered in a short radius from the centre of the marshes.

Distance from Athens center 50 km (45-60 min drive)
